In 2018 Whitney Thomas started growing food for her family. Thankfully, in the height of the pandemic, as a single mother of six, she had a way to keep her family fed fresh and healthy foods as the grocery stores dried up. From a small garden, Whitney not only started feeding her family, but received a lot of interest from community members. This is how Royal Roots was formed. In 2021 Whitney moved to a larger parcel of land which allowed her to raise more chickens and build out her produce operation. She takes pride in currently growing with regenerative no-till practices and without chemicals, providing fresh natural food for the community. Royal Roots now sells a variety produce and eggs at the Prince Georges farmers' market. Learning that the demand is hard to keep up with, they are excited to build out infrastructure for next season.
