Gardens of Khmet is a small farm tucked in Madison County, the Heart of the Piedmont. Khalil Hassan farms and manages Gardens of Khmet with little help but still makes things work. Khalil is a former Marine and a retired Fire/Arson Investigator. He started gardening in Maryland making use of the little space he had. That eventually evolved from community gardening into buying land to grow on. On a beautiful sprawling 55-acre plot Khalil grows a wide variety of produce, fruit trees, and berries. He also processes an amazing variety of value-added products. At Charlottesville City Market you can catch Gardens of Khmet with syrups, jams, dried fruit, and candied nuts along with his produce. They take pride in growing things with natural practices the way nature intended. Khalil has several spaces in the Piedmont region that he farms including The George Washington Carver Agricultural Research Center. He takes his excess produce to local food banks where he is passionate about giving fresh quality food to those that may not otherwise have access to it.
